什麼時候用個案研究法 (case study approach) 呢？在 Yin 的 Case study research: Design and methods，提供了一個簡單的方法：
There’s no fomula, but your choice depends in large part on your research questions. The more that your questions seek to explain some present circumstance (e.g., “how” or “why” some social phenomenon works), the more that the case study method will be relevant. The method also is relevant the more that your questions require an extensive and “in depth” description of some social phenomenon.
簡單地說，就是如果你的研究問題主要是看「如何」、「為什麼」等社會現象，個案研究法就非常適合。另外，如果你想要「深入」的看某個社會現象，用個案研究法也非常適合。
