現在許多論文格式都要求引用博士論文的時候，加上UMI編號，讓讀者更容易找到你所引用的論文。
以APA第六版格式為例，引用論文的格式在EndNote中變成：
Author. |(Year). Title. Degree| Thesis Type|, University|, Place Published|. `Retrieved from` URL| `Available from` Database Provider Name of Database database.| (Document Number)
而最後的document number，就是UMI上面的編號。舉個具體的例子來說，依照APA 6th格式的話，那博士論文的引用應該如下：
Annable, C. J. (2013). An investigation of laptop classrooms and the teaching and learning of mathematics (Doctoral dissertation). Available from ProQuest. (UMI No. NS22008)
問題來了，該怎麼找UMI編號呢？首先，到UMI的網站：http://dissexpress.umi.com/dxweb/search.html
之後輸入篇名，此例子為：An investigation of laptop classrooms and the teaching and learning of mathmatics
輸完之後按下search，結果如下：
最後面的數字就是UMI號碼了。
