代名詞 (pronoun) 在英語中的作用，就是回指前面已經提過的名詞，這看起來簡單，其實我覺得學問很大，千萬不要以為只要簡單的將前面提過的名詞替換成 it、he、she、we 就好了。根據我自己寫英文 paper 的經驗，我老闆常常把 it 或 this 圈起來，問我指的是前面哪一個名詞。
關於使用代名詞常犯的錯誤，像是單複數要跟動詞形態一致、代名詞要跟前方回指的名詞的單複數要一致，這些我相信大家在學英文文法的時候都學過，這裡就不提了。我覺得文法書上比較少提及的，是代名詞的指稱問題，也就是剛才上面所說的「你的 it 和 this 指的是前面哪一個」。
如果只是把這些規則列出來，相信大家印象也不深刻，因為當規則放在你面前時，你都會覺得很正確，但自己看句子時，卻又看不出來哪裡有問題。所以我覺得比較好的學習方式是先看句子，先看看有沒有錯，然後下附規則。
規則一
Although the motorcycle hit the tree, it was not damaged.
Jerry found a gun in the trousers(褲子) which he wore.
上面兩個句子有沒有錯，有錯的話又錯在哪裡呢？

John put a bullet in his gun and shot it.
I don't think they should show violence on TV.

規則一
第一個句子，it 指的是 motorcycle 還是 tree?
第二個句子，which 指的是 gun 還是 trousers？
所以規則一就是：pronoun 前面只有一個 antecedent (先行詞)，也就是這個 pronoun 只能對應到前面一個名詞而已，不能對應到多個，造成歧義。下面的句子大家就自己練眼力。
Jerry called Steve twelve times while he was in Reno.
If you put this sheet in your notebook, you can refer to it.
規則二
第一個句子，it 沒有明確的指稱，第二個句子也是，不知道 they 指的是誰。
所以規則二就是：pronoun 一定要有明確的指稱，這個名詞要在之前要存在，不能是需要讀者猜的。
The craftspersons' union reached an agreement on Ruth's penalty, but it took time.
這句我覺得不是很容易看出來，it 可指的是 union，或是 implied 的 decision making process，所以這個 it 算是有點模糊。
規則三
第一個句子的 it ，可以指 vacation，也可以指 vacation is coming soon 這整件事，所以不清楚是指什麼。
第二個句子也是一樣，it 可指的是 body，或是整件事。
由於在英文 it 可指這兩種，在用的時候就要看看是否會有不同的意思。如果前面的句子已經用 and 作連接，而後面想要說「前面所說的這些是…」，那建議不要用 which，而是用 these + 名詞 + 你想說的，這樣會比較清楚。
規則四
這個滿容易的，就是一句裡面不要出現多個相同的 pronoun，以避免指稱不同。
規則五
這兩句滿容易就忽略了。第一句： The candy dish was empty, but we were tired of eating it anyway. 這個 it 不能指 candy，因為在這句中，candy 是adjective，修飾 dish，所以在這句中不是名詞，it 並不能回指 candy。當然，it 是可以回指 dish 的，但是應該沒人會吃 dish 吧？
第二句的問題也是一樣的，Mark called Mary’s house all day, but she never answered the phone. 在這句裡，Mary’s 是修飾 house，不是一個名詞，所以 she 不能回指 Mary。
所以規則五就是：pronoun 並不能回指 a possesive or an adjective。
